What began as a modest-sized West Coast music festival quickly grew into one of the country’s biggest and most anticipated live concert events of the year.

Launched in 1999 from its permanent home at Empire Polo Field in Indio, Calif., the earliest installments of the Coachella Music Festival featured jam-packed lineups over a single weekend, before eventually making the move to two full weekends in 2012 in order to be better able to accommodate ever-growing demand.

Accordingly, Coachella lineups over the years have been comprised of a mix of artists offering a little something for everyone, beginning with Rage Against the Machine and Beck during the inaugural weekend, and later including headliners like Coldplay, Paul McCartney, The Killers, Jay Z, Kanye West, Arcade Fire, Prince, Roger Waters, and The Cure, among many, many others.
